Books and Blizzards

Yours truly spent yesterday volunteering for the Savannah Book Festival ...as always this local, FREE, festival is a delight for the mind and soul! Amazing authors, thought-provoking discussions and gorgeous venues in the Historic District.

This year offered a DELIGHT of hilarious Southern wordsmiths... really, just bust-a-gut, knee-slapping, snorting milk out of your nose kind of funny!

First was Lauretta Hannon (www.thecrackerqueen.com). Lawd have mercy, this girl is FUNNY! She is  proud of her cracker past...she really did grow up in a double-wide in Warner-Robbins, GA with parents who gave out ammunition as baby shower gifts and tossed packs of smokes to "family members" in the local chain gang! There wasn't a dry eye in the Jepson Auditorium as she told story after story about her crazy yet loving family...her aunt who enjoyed "frequent flyer" status in the local jail  and the love story about her parents meeting at a moonshine still! This is all true girls, and if we're lucky, we're going to try to get Lauretta to visit us real soon and hopefully sign some of her books.

The next author, Rick Bragg was standing-room only...folks were lined up down the hall of the Jepson to hear this sweet and funny Alabama boy (Pulitzer Prize winner, no less) share the stories he wrote about his family. "All Over But the Shoutin", and his newest, "Ava's Man"...are books about what he calls "his south"...written for and about the waitress in The Waffle House, the cement worker or the local roofer. "The Prince of Frogtown" was written (a painstaking 5 year journey) about his father.. a whiskey-maker, roofer and a prolific fighter! This guy is FUNNY and his sleepy Southern humor had the entire crowd in tears...!

Two other Southern writers had us in stitches...first Robert Leleux from Houston, TX. His book, "The Memoirs of a Beautiful Boy" about his life as a boy during his mother's torturous (yet hysterical) divorce was a side-splitter! He spoke of the post-divorce trauma of being "nouveau poor" and how his father left his mother for a pregnant jockey. When he confronted his mother (a Southern belle if you've ever seen one...Bless her heart!) about getting a job, she replied, "Going to work just ruins the whole day"! Do we love her or what??

The last author was Janis Owens, with her newest novel/cookbook, "The Cracker Kitchen".She shared her views on being raised in backwoods Florida as well as a hip-slapping history on all things Cracker (the originals hail from Florida), to her Pentecostal upbringing  (food was the only sin allowed) to her use of lard in cooking. The book is full of fabulously fattening and comforting recipes as well as stories about her own Cracker Clan!

                                  Pass the suntan oil!

Where are the palm trees??

Let It SNOW....NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sister Susan is up in the MD/PA area visiting family and checking out some fabu items for the store for this spring...gotta keep things fresh at Seaside Sisters! Little did she know she was heading for Snowpocalypse 2010 or otherwise called Snowmaggedon....she's fanny deep in snow, but just fine! She'll be flying back to us tomorrow! I'm sure she'll be glad to get back to warmer climes and all of you Sisters!

Till next time ladies...stay warm and keep your chins up (all of them)!!!!

Snuggie Weather

I don't know about you gals, but Cousin Linda is flippin freezing! As I sit here blogging (more like schlogging because my fingers are frozen), I wonder if we haven't experienced a total polar shift... do we not live in the subtropical South??? Have we  woken up in Antarctica??? Who's in charge at the Weather Channel?? Even hunky "meteorologist, Jim Cantore can't explain away these tundra-like conditions!!! Now everyone, go grab that Snuggie that you got from Santa (mine has Betty Boop on it), throw some bourbon in your coffee and let's dream of all things yummy and warm..................

"Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens".... Bling rings and candles and aprons with ruffles... mermaids and Bomb Squad and cute canvas duffles.... simply some of our most favorite things!!! Now everyone.... SING!!!

Nothing like a little piece of Lalo jewelry to make all things warm and fuzzy again. Just
gets you to dreaming of warm days on the beach and finding some seaglass....

Or maybe give that cold blank wall a little "mermaid magic" to remind you of twirling your toes in the Tybee summer tide...

All is not lost... this cold snap (hell, we could be in Buffalo, New York!) will pass and the balmy temps will remind us why we live here or visit so often!

So in the meantime, we've got some fabulous events coming up in February...so rest up sisters, you're gonna need it!

February 12/13/14....so much to do! Tybee Mardi Gras, Valentine's Day and Tie the Knot on Tybee... details to come! Of course, Seaside Sisters is HQ for all things Mardi Gras...hats, glasses. boas and jewelry! Et toi...bring on the beignets!

End of February, our first "Pet Project"... the "We Love Our Labs" (and other furry critters) Fundraiser. We'll be working with Coastal Pet Rescue and The Milton Project... proceeds from Seaside Sisters sales will go to help these valuable animal rescue/aid organizations. Check out our fabulous Labrador and charming cat pillows in the store...or grab a copy of "Bad Dog" or "Bad Cat" for the pet-lover in your life! (these books are "wet-your-pants funny!!!)

Alas girls, time to add another layer of wool, another pair of socks and and dust off the long underwear. Y'all stay warm until next time....and pppsssttt...no one need know about the "strength" of your coffee...it's between us girls!

Happy Yew Near!!!!

FOR NOTHING MAY YOU YEN in 2010!!!

Well gang, it is now officially 1/1/10...kinda weird ain't it??? Now we can all spend countless days ripping up checks with 2009 on them... it may take awhile, but me thinks 2010 could be a vast improvement over 2009!

Seaside Sisters had a pretty decent year, thanks to Tybee locals and our die-hard customers who drove from all over Savannah to shop in our store. Many thanks to all of you!

In case you haven't been in since this fall, we BUSTED out of our space and into the adjoining one...now Seaside Sisters is bigger and just FULL of even more fabulosity!

This past year we saw ZERO hurricanes (thank heavens!) and  Miley Cyrus shot a soon-to-be-released film on Tybee Island.  Summer was beautiful and fall spectacular, as always!  The holiday season proved to be a weather roller coaster with 70's one day and 40's the next! In the South we NEVER put our summer clothes away!!!

2010 will bring a plethora of positively pleasing activities at Seaside Sisters and on Tybee Island! January we're reducing all the holiday stuff in the store as we honor those with Snowflake Bucks and push our 2010 Sale....buy 20 get 10 for free! (Actually buy 2 of any like item and get the third FREE!)

In February we've got Mardi Gras, Tie the Knot on Tybee and our first Seaside Sisters new "pet project" wherein we'll collaborate with Coastal Pet Rescue and the Milton Project to help raise money for the needy animals on the island. And after that, we start gearing up for St. Patty's Day!!!

So again, thank you for a wonderful year... we couldn't have done it without y'all! Happy New Year and don't be a stranger ...come on in and see us soon!!!!!

Bewitched, Betrothed and Be Bigger!

There goes the neighborhood....

Lawd have mercy...so much has happened in the past 2 weeks, I'm feeling the vapors coming on....smelling salts, please!

First of all Halloween was frighteningly fabulous! As always, the folks on Lewis Avenue made it THE place to be on All Hallows Eve.... talk about going "all out". These folks know how to throw a party!!! Every single resident on the street decorates their homes to the HILT and has candy for the HUNDREDS of kids that make the trip to Tybee from all over Savannah! Check out this home.... gives me the creepy-crawlies just looking at it!

Second, yours truly, Seaside Cousin Linda, "did the deed"... indeed, she got married (who says its ever too late???). The evening was amazing...family, friends, food and ZYDECO! Dancing shoes were donned by all...plenty of blisters going around after this sassy soiree! A lovely honeymoon in Jamaica and it's back to Seaside Sisters!!!!!

                                           Tybee Tatas BUST Loose!!!

The 2nd Annual Tybee Tatas "Save the Girls" Beach Party was held on Sunday, November 8th at Marlin Monroe's. The event, to raise money for breast cancer research, was stuffed (sorry!) and the money was flowing while the bras were overflowing! The party raised over $13,000 with the proceeds going to the local Young Survivors Coalition. As was the case last year, the Bad Boyz in Bras was the show-stopper! Men with a strong hold on their feminine sides, boasted, bragged and busted their way into raising big bucks for the cause. THANKS to everyone for a wonderful day....just wait until next year!

                                           Boyz just wanna have fun!!!

Fantastical Fall Fun

Lawd have mercy... we sure wish FALL would really get here! Rumor has it, it is right around the bend...but right now the whole world feels like one BIG hot flash!!!

But steamy October temps do not hinder the friends and fans of Seaside Sisters...no way, ladies! We've got all kinds of new stuff and news to share with our devoted domestic divas!

Well, PIRATE FEST was a wet one...again! Seems the clouds like to partake in the festivities as well!! But the crowds were undaunted by a few lousy raindrops (actually it was a DELUGE, but none were deterred!) The Pirate Fest Party went on as scheduled and the crowds had a bloody ball....arrrrggghhhhhh! It was like Wenches Gone Wild...fabulous costumes everywhere, albeit damp!

Our friends, the O'Neill girls, looking ravishing!

                                                 Pirate pup!   Arrrggggh...I mean Arrrrfffff!

The shop was HOPPING with folks all weekend long! THANKS for all of those that stopped in to shop, chat and show off your pirate gear!

                                                                   Seaside Samaritan!

And speaking of dogs...no, we're not selling them at the shop, but Susan almost kept this little guy. Poor "Ziggy" was left in a hot car in the parking lot and Sister Susan was a tad concerned about the little baby!  She rescued the distressed bundle, attached him to one of Sister Tracey's fabu doggie leashes (that we sell in the shop, of course!) and sought out the owners. Me thinks they were a tad embarrassed that we had "dog-napped" Ziggy but I think the ASPCA would be VERY pleased! (P.S. Notice the striking apron.... NEW at the store!!!)

A special SHOUT OUT to our new honorary Sister, Dr. Jane Helwig, from Lancaster, South Carolina. Dr. Helwig stopped in and purchased FOUR of Sister Nancy Smith's fabu chandeliers!! Where would she be placing these glittering globes of glee???? In the offices of her OB/GYN practice!!! Now does this girl get it or what???? THANKS Dr. Jane...you've added a whole new dimension to the dreaded oven mitts!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS, GIRLS!

We're turning TWO!! Potty-trained and everything!!!!

Join us October 17th-18th to celebrate TWO terrific years in business! We've got all kinds of great new items.... aprons, kitchen linens, candles, Halloween decor, purses, jewelry...we'll have specials on many items and yes, THERE WILL BE CAKE!  And stop in to the Tybee Arts Festival on the Pier as well!
